AFSCHEID VAN/ FAREWELL TO KOFFI CHRYSANTHE ZOUNNADJALA

Het continent is volop in ontwikkeling, een continent dat zijn identiteit en plaats in de wereld nog moet vinden. Dat geldt ook voor de vakbonden. De ontwikkeling verloopt chaotisch en soms onvoorspelbaar vooral als er weer eens een staatsgreep plaatsvindt of er een gewelddadig conflict uitbarst. Koffi hield in deze chaos altijd zijn hoofd koel en probeerde er onder alle omstandigheden het beste van te maken.

The continent is in full development, a continent that still needs to find its identity and place in the world. This also applies to the unions. Development is chaotic and sometimes unpredictable, especially when another coup d'état occurs or a violent conflict erupts. In this chaos, Koffi always kept a cool head and tried to make the best of it under all circumstances.

Koffi is niet mijn eerste vakbondsvriend in Afrika die is overleden maar wel de vakbondsvriend die ik het langs kende. We kenden elkaar sinds 1992, toen ik als Verbondssecretaris bij het Wereld Verbond van de Arbeid in Brussel ging werken.

Hij was als enige vertegenwoordiger uit Afrika in dat jaar op het wereldcongres van het Wereldverbond van Beambten in Chili. We maakten toen een afspraak. Hij zou zich inzetten voor de opbouw van een regionale Afrikaanse organisatie, ik zou voor de benodigde politieke en financiële steun zorgen. Dat is gelukt. 

Koffi werd algemeen secretaris van de eerste Afrikaanse organisatie van het Wereld Verbond van Beambten (1997). Hij pakte het zo goed aan dat in  2000 voor het eerst in de geschiedenis een wereldcongres van het wereldverbond kon worden gehouden in Afrika, in de Togolese hoofdstad Lomé, tevens ook de thuisstad van Koffi’s vakbondswerk. 

Koffi was ook algemeen secretaris van de lokale bond van mototaxi chauffeurs, winkelbedienden enz. Zijn bond was aangesloten bij de nationale vakcentrale CSTT. In 2014 sprak hij als lid van het wereldbestuur van de World Organization of Workers WOW op de internationale ILO conferentie in Geneve. 

Met Koffi als vriend en vakbondsman heb ik de arbeiders en werknemers van Afrika leren kennen in de meest diverse omstandigheden in vele Afrikaanse landen. Het was een eer te mogen werken met hem en ik bedank heb voor zijn vriendschap en het prachtige werk dat ik met hem in Afrika heb mogen doen.

Koffi wasn't my first African trade union friend to pass away, but he was the one I knew the longest. We had known each other since 1992, when I started working as a Trade Union Secretary at the World Confederation of Labour in Brussels.

He was the only representative from Africa at the World Congress of the World Confederation of White-Collar Workers in Chile that year. We made an agreement then. He would commit himself to building a regional African organization, and I would provide the necessary political and financial support. He succeeded.

Koffi became general secretary of the first African organization of the World Confederation of White-Collar Workers (1997). He handled it so well that in 2000, for the first time in history, a World Congress of the World Confederation of White-Collar Workers was held in Africa, in the Togolese capital of Lomé, which was also the hometown of Koffi's trade union work.

Koffi was also general secretary of the local union of motorcycle taxi drivers, shop assistants, etc. His union was affiliated with the national trade union federation CSTT. In 2014, as a member of the World board of the World Organization of Workers (WOW), he spoke at the international ILO conference in Geneva.

With Koffi as a friend and trade unionist, I got to know the workers and employees of Africa in the most diverse circumstances in many African countries. It was an honor to work with him, and I thank him for his friendship and the wonderful work I was able to do with him in Africa.
